In the story Counting the Days by Emma Donoghue the reader feels the tone change in the story drastically. The plots in the short stories change very fast and I think that is because the way of communication is letters and the writers are trying to emphasize on the fact that their would be so much issues with communicating to one another. .I found the ending most compelling, it happened so fast that he died and that he wasn’t going to make it. It was really heart wrenching finding out that he died and she was at the ship waiting for him. The ending created a whole shift in the tone. In the beginning you are following this long distance love story and the reader is routing for them. The ending is absolutely heart breaking and changes the tone of the story to sorrow, depression, and hopeless. Letter writing was very important in this story. They promised and were agreed on meeting each other at the ship. Jane is set on that she is going to see him there and that they will be reunited. She has no way of knowing that he died she will have no way of knowing either. It shows how hard communicating back then was.
